Brazil | 2005 | Directed by Andrucha Waddington
Logline: The plight of a woman, and her feisty daughter, over the span of nearly sixty years, as she tries in vain to adapt to a life in a desolate landscape of shifting sand dunes.
This is a stunningly realised character study of mother and daughter, juxtaposed against a harsh, unforgiving, yet beautiful geography that (more. . .)

For today’s installment of Extraordinary Videos, I’m posting an interview that took place between Evangelical Preacher/Exorcist/Charismatic Televangelist Pastor Bob Larson and the children of Anton Lavey.
As you likely know, Anton Szandor LaVey was the American founder and High Priest of the Church of Satan. He was also a writer, a musician, and a provocateur.
His daughter, Zeena LaVey and her husband Nikolas Schreck, agreed to appear with Pastor (more. . .)

A neighborhood success in North Tampa, Marchello’s is a treat
It is only fitting that Marchello’s Pizzeria and Restaurant, at the corner of North Dale Mabry and Van Dyke Road, is in the same strip center as the gym to which Joan and I had belonged and had visited nearly every day before I fell and fractured my kneecap.. Our first visit to this restaurant was just after they had (more. . .)

The search for the best breakfast continues.
I think my favorite meal of the day, whenever I’m away from home or when I feel like treating myself to an inexpensive but luxurious meal is breakfast. There are in Tampa a number of places that serve elegant brunches; Oystercatchers springs to mind. But that is for, on my budget, a very special occasion.
I had been urged by my granddaughter, Jessica, (more. . .)

Archaeologists have found a cellar in the town of Pécs in southern Hungary, believed to have belonged to Wallachian Duke Vlad III, more commonly known as Vlad the Impaler or Dracula.
Tamás Fedeles, a tutor of medieval and early modern history at Pécs University said his research showed that Vlad III Tepes lived in a two-story town house on what is now the city’s central square.
Wallachia, which is (more. . .)

Those familiar with my restaurant comments are aware of several basics. I truly love Italian food, am a sucker for a bowl of pasta and personally prefer a small independent “Mom and Pop” establishment over a chain, the latter often scaling down taste and variety in order to appeal to a larger number of patrons. Apparently, no one has bothered to tell that to the corporate owners of the (more. . .)

Let me tell you about a Republican whose positions are diametrically opposed to those in which I believe. For example, my subject
has been a military prosecutor and has little sympathy for persons accused of a crime and, indeed, often considers accusation and conviction as a unit;
is a proponent of the death penalty and limits on appeals by convicted criminals;
has voted for and advocated wiretaps without prior judicial (more. . .)

Nightmare disorder occurs when a person has an anxiety attack in his or her sleep. This happens mostly to children, but it can affect adults as well, especially victims of trauma. The onset of these nightmares usually occurs before the age of 20, which accounts for more than 2/3 of cases. When the onset is during childhood, many children will outgrow the disorder. However, when the onset is after the (more. . .)

Left out of superannuation discussions almost entirely are the dwindling accounts of the nation’s casual workers. This group, while being almost entirely ignored when it comes to the subject of superannuation, is far from insignificant. Even modest estimates claim casual workers represent more than a quarter of the entire workforce.

USA | 1982 | Directed by John Carpenter
Logline: A scientific research station in the Antarctic is infiltrated by a xenomorphic alien life-form that steadily consumes and imitates each member.
John Carpenter’s brilliant remake of Howard Hawk’s B-movie The Thing From Another World (1951) is without a doubt one of the greatest modern horrors ever made. Up with Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Day of the Dead, (more. . .)

It’s almost that time of year again where the dead rise and walk amongst us.
Here are some videos and links for costumes to help you achieve the perfect look. We all want to look our vampy best don’t we? There will be makeup tips, a how-to for applying realistic fangs and bite marks.
First, here is an instructional video on some pretty extreme female vamp face. It’s worth (more. . .)

But they cannot be totally ignored!
If I have, finally, learned anything by writing political blogs it is that it is impossible to engage in rational discussions with those on the rabid right fringe. Fortunately, all the evidence seems to point to the impotency of their rants. Glenn and Rush and the stalwarts at Fox News spew irrational and inconsistent garbage, but garner only a miniscule proportion of voters and (more. . .)

Formaggio’s in Lithia, a disappointment
Very often, The Lovely Joan [TLJ] and I will pass a sign advising that a new restaurant will be arriving in the neighborhood or we hear of a restaurant that sounds like it might be interesting. On many occasions, we plan on trying the place out but, due to the high mortality rate among new businesses, especially restaurants, the establishment closes before we have (more. . .)

Tampa is the site of two large major universities, one public, the University of South Florida, the other private, the University of Tampa. The latter school prides itself for having undergraduate students from over 100 foreign countries; USF, one of the largest public universities in Florida, has well over 1600 students and research scholars from nearly 150 foreign countries. It is not surprising; therefore, that Tampa has a plethora (more. . .)

I have become reconciled that some on the far right fringe have lost all sense of reality. I realize that many are addicted to Fox News and its prime time assemblage of provocateurs. The addiction has cause otherwise (I assume) rational human beings to, as one contributor to Orble continues to do, refer to President Barack Obama as “B.O. (B.S.)” on the ground that the president was alleged to have (more. . .)
