Religion plays a big part in the lives of millions around the globe. This must give many of these religious leaders enormous influence in world affairs, something that can’t be too bad a thing provided the influence is used to better the lives of the most vulnerable among us.

This has to be one of the most adorable things I’ve ever seen. Her name is Sonya and she is a Slow Loris (Nycticebus Coucang) – a slow moving primate found throughout southeast Asia inhabiting tropical evergreen rain forests. They are mainly fruit eaters but will also eat insects, leaves and bird’s eggs. The saliva of the species is toxic and used as a defense against predators but as you (more. . .)

One of the policies that helped Kevin Rudd and the Labor Party win government back in 2007 was a commitment to environment protection and preservation. I love bats. They’re my second favorite animal. My first love is for cats. Sadly, I am not fond of rats. But it would have made a nice trifecta if I did, yes?
Bats have always been a source of wonder and inspiration for me. They’re just…beautiful and magical creatures. There are a few precious bats that hang out in the entry to my building. They flitter around in the (more. . .)

If this doesn’t melt your cold heart, nothing will.
In Norway, on the Austfonna ice cap, located on Nordaustlandet in the Svalbard archipelago, the ice is melting. Rising sea levels due to early ice melt are causing great concern to scientists around the globe.
Marine photographer and environmental lecturer Michael Nolan captured the stunning picture of the disappearing glacier, and the image that turned up is at once awe inspiring (more. . .)

World food markets are mostly, but not entirely, a legacy of the market economy, the globalisation of world trade. Although the obsession to ship food products around the world is just one of the reasons behind  the alarming amount of food that is wasted globally each year, it is one that is kept pretty quiet.

That’s not to say that our individual food waste shouldn’t come under regular scrutiny as (more. . .)

Evolution in action?
This is some fascinating news that sparks all kinds of questions. According to a new book, Thinkers Of The Jungle, by Gerd Schuster, Willie Smits and Jay Ullal, the below image shows an orangutan in the process of attempting to spear a fish. If this is in fact what the ape is doing, then it is a first. No other orangutan has ever been seen using a (more. . .)

Well, it appears that my neck of the woods has made national news again. And the reason?? The weather, of course!
A few days ago, Mother Nature thought that the tough people of North Dakota just weren’t quite done with winter, and saw fit for us to receive one final (let’s hope!) dose of snow before we can finally enjoy the few brief months of summer that we all look (more. . .)

This seems an appropriate post for Earth Day, as it has been revealed that Astronomers have discovered a planet outside our solar system that is similar in size to Earth.
An American expert called the discovery of the tiny planet “extraordinary.” (Nice!)
This is an important revelation, as most planets discovered outside our solar system tend to be around the size of Jupiter, which dwarfs the Earth by huge measures. (more. . .)

As the days go by, things seem to be looking a bit brighter. Fargo is on the downturn. The water keeps receding and dikes are holding.
Here in Grand Forks, the water is still rising, and expected to crest very soon. Today we are very near the expected crest of 50 ft, and it appears that our sophisticated flood protection system is doing its job! While the rest of the (more. . .)

After posting my original story regarding the Red River Flood of 2009 that we’ve been fighting here in the Midwest and continue to fight, I decided to send the story to my favorite radio show, Coast to Coast Am.
