I am sad to report that Whitney Houston has died today at the young age of 48. It is still unclear how she died, or where she was when it happened, but her publicist, Kristen Foster reported that the singer passed away this afternoon. It is something I really don’t want to speculate about, but I an sure everyone’s mind goes straight to something drug related considering Houston troubled history.

Houston was born to be a superstar. Her mother was gospel and blues singer Cissy Houston, and her cousin was Dionne Warwick. Also, her Godmother was the Queen of Soul herself, Aretha Franklin. All the right influences were there from the start.

For many of my generation one of the quintessential movies of our youth was John Hughes’s classic (now you could put many movie titles right here, but today it is…) Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. Some advertising executive has realized this and connected the fact that many of us are entering our 40s or coming close to it and are possibly in the market for a new car.

That is why you will see the following commercial during this weekend’s Super Bowl XLVI from Indianapolis. The commercial is for the Honda C-RV, and while it is a far cry from the 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California it does manage to get Ferri…umm Matthew around town on his day of playing hookie from work.

As you can see it incorporates a lot of things from the movie and puts its own little spin on them. The famous scene where Ben Stein as the Economics teacher is taking attendance. Broderick’s almost perfect recreation of that memorable cough. The scene where Ferris is in a cab next to his father is replaced with one where he is next to his agent. Be sure to keep your eye on the stuffed panda. The scenes in the museum, included a redoing of Cameron’s reflection in art scene. Horse Track replaces the Cubs game, Chinese parade where he stops and sings on a float, the valet taking off in the car.

One of the best inclusions from the film is the iconic song, Oh Yeah by Yello playing throughout the whole commercial.

It then comes to a close in the perfect way, with one of my favorite quotes from the movie. “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” Well, this is the “extended” version of the commercial, so don’t stop watching yet.

I think it is a great commercial, and probably one of the best that will air this Sunday. I do wish they would have included Alan Ruck and Mia Sara at least a little bit. Perhaps put Ruck in a Gordie Howe jersey and have Broderick pass by him in the museum where they give each other that little nod to say hello. Or instead of having the little girl sitting next to Broderick on the rollercoaster have it be Mia Sara screaming, and when Broderick turns to calm her she gives him a peck on the cheek.

Let’s see what’s trending today!

Lots of stuff trending today that I want to cover. We begin with another star having some possible troubles with drugs and alcohol. This time it is Charlie Sheen’s Spin City co-star Heather Locklear again. Her sister placed a call to 911 thinking that she was in need of medical attention. The fire department and Ventura County Sheriff’s Department responded to the call at Locklear’s Thousand Oaks, California. They determined she needed to be hospitalized. She was taken by ambulance to Los Robles Hospital & Medical Center at about 2:30 PM PT. She was held in the hospital overnight.

In a statement released by the hospital her parents, who were by their daughter’s side, said, “She is in no danger and she’s going to be just fine.”

TMZ has reported that law enforcement officials told them that she had taken, “a dangerous mix of prescription drugs and alcohol.”

Of course this all comes less than two months after Locklear broke off her engagement to former Melrose Place co-star Jack Wagner. It is also not the first time she has had trouble. In 2009 she pleaded no contest to reckless driving after being arrested for suspicion of driving while under the influence of prescription drugs. Also in 2008 her doctor dialed 911 thinking she had overdosed on prescriptions drugs.

It could be just another in a long line of downward spirals taken by stars and pop culture icons. I never really expected stuff like this from Locklear though. It is sad to see from anyone, but even worse when it is someone you have watched since the early 1980s (the TJ Hooker days) right through to today. Let’s hope she can get some help and straighten things out before they get any worse. Perhaps Dr. Drew has some room in the next season of Celebrity Rehab? Not that that might be the best option out there. I wish her good luck in getting things back in order.

Elsewhere in the trends:

Going in an entirely different direction… Last night CBS premiered a new half hour comedy after their big Thursday night hit show The Big Bang Theory. That show is ¡Rob!. It marked the return of Rob Schneider to television for the first time since his 1996-97 series Men Behaving Badly was canceled. It also brings Cheech Marin back to TV screens each week. Schneider portrays the title character Rob who meets Maggie (Claudia Bassols) and soon after runs off to Las Vegas to marry her. When the initial honeymoon wears off it is time for Rob to meet Maggie’s big Mexican family. Her father Fernando (Marin) and and moreso her mother Rosa (Diana Maria Riva) do not like it at all and want to end the marriage right away. By the end of the pilot episode last night they started to warm up to Rob though…sort of.

I have to say I absolutely LOVED the show! My wife pointed out it will be canceled after about 3 episodes because I laughed way too much at it. I certainly hope not. I think it could last at least the rest of the season, and depending on how fresh they can keep the hilarious comedy it may even get a second season.

Also trending in TV is the new NBC drama The Firm starring Josh Lucas. The show is based on the John Grisham novel of the same name and is set 10 years after where the movie left off. Apparently it must be a good show because it has been trending off and on since its premiere this past Sunday. I haven’t watched it yet! I have all three hours of it on my DVR waiting for me though. Perhaps NBC has finally found that show that can fill the E.R. timeslot for more than a season. We shall see. I am hoping to get around to watching it some time over the weekend, or at least before next week’s episode.

OK, I am realizing a lot of this post is TV related. I just finished watching the first two hours of The Today Show. Today they were celebrating their 60th Anniversary. They had anchors from the last six decades gathered to reminisce and laugh together. I have only become a Today Show fan in recent years because my wife is a school teacher and I am up in the mornings getting her out the door at the same time it comes on. It was great over the past week or two to see all the old clips from the show and hear all the stories. I am sure there will be clips of it online later for those that missed it. Happy Birthday Today Show!

Before we move too far away from TV related topics (and yes we get very far away from TV) I have one more. Stephen Colbert has been told he cannot be on the South Carolina Primary ballot. There is no write-in vote allowed on South Carolina ballots either so he won’t have a shot in the primary. Polls however, had shown that Colbert was polling higher than Jon Huntsman! I bet if Colbert got serious about it he could come close to Mitt Romney numbers.

A long time subscriber to the New York Philharmonic who has become known as Patron X came forward to talk to The New York Times and tell their side of the story. If you haven’t heard about this yet, which I hadn’t until this morning, Tuesday night at Lincoln Center in the closing moments of a performance of Mahler’s Ninth Symphony an iPhone began going off. Conductor Alan Gilbert actually put down his baton and brought the performance to a halt until the phone was silenced. Gilbert said, “This ring tone was going on and on and on and it was actually the loudest thing in the hall. There was so much tension and there was such a stunned feeling I think for everybody in the room but certainly for the musicians.” It turns out the iPhone wasn’t ringing, but instead it was an alarm going of on the phone. Patron X explained that it was a new phone, a replacement for his BlackBerry from his company and that he had turned it off before the show. He was unsure on how to work the new iPhone, unaware that the alarm was set, and that a phone even had an alarm. Patron X has spoken directly to Gilbert and apologized for the whole incident.

Iran has been warned by the U.S. that if they try to close the Strait of Hormuz, as they had threatened to do recently, that we would take steps to reopen the waterway. The Strait connects the Gulf of Oman and the Persian Gulf and has about 16 million barrels of oil, about a fifth of the world’s daily oil trade, pass through it every day. The steps that could be taken include warship escorts, or even all out war and airstrikes. Let’s hope they stay out of the way. Sending everyone back to a new war in the same area almost immediately after pulling everyone out of Iraq would be devastating in so many ways.

Staying in Iran, or better put getting out of Iran… Today at 2PM CT in the Detroit, Michigan suburb of Sterling Heights a special swearing-in ceremony will take place in the home of Iranian Warina Zaya Bahou for her to become a U.S. Citizen. Why is this so special? Well she is 111 years old! She will become the second oldest person ever to become a naturalized U.S. Citizen. Welcome to America Warina!

First Lady Michelle Obama has joined the world of Twitter. You can find her @MichelleObama. Keep in mind though the account was setup and will be managed by campaign staff. the First Lady will however also be personally tweeting on the account too. It you see a tweet signed “-mo” it is direct from Michelle Obama. her first actual tweet yesterday was, “Hi, everyone, and thanks for the warm welcome. Look forward to staying in touch with you here. -mo”. She followed it a few hours later with a call to service on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, “Here’s something dear to my heart: the MLK Day of Service. Will you join me to serve the community on Monday? -mo”. Her tweet included a link explaining just what it is all about. you can visit the site here, Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

Finally, today is Friday the 13th! I don’t mind Friday the 13ths like many do. 13 is actually my lucky number. Many people are deathly afraid of it though. The fear of the number 13 as many will know is triskaidekaphobia. If you think you had a hard time figuring out how to say that just wait for these next two words. If you have a morbid, irrational fear of Friday the 13th is called friggatriskaidekaphobia. Apparently a therapist named Dr. Donald Dossey who specializes in treating people with irrational fears suffers from friggatriskaidekaphobia himself. He coined the term for a person who has the fear, paraskevidekatriaphobic. He also (jokingly?) claimed at one point that once you can pronounce that one you are cured of the fear.

This isn’t any ordinary Friday the 13th either. this is a rare year that will see three Friday the 13ths occur. April 13th and July 13th are both also Fridays. Now not to totally freak out any paraskevidekatriaphobics who might be reading this… If you do the math, those three Friday the 13ths are precisely 13 weeks apart from one another.

Perhaps this ties into all the predictions of the world ending this year??? Let’s see if Harold Camping comes out to say the new end of the world date is Friday, July 13th!

Let’s see whats trending today!

The first thing that jumps out at me is a story about Mississippi’s Republican Governor Haley Barbour, well let’s call him former Governor now. As his final act as Governor of the Magnolia State he pardoned more than 200 people. That’s right, more than 200! This has sent many in the state into an uproar. Some of these people were convicted murderers, criminals serving life sentences and more.

Apparently most of them were already out of jail and had already finished their sentences. Still, a pardon means their record is wiped clean. This opens the door for them to vote, own a firearm legally, get a professional license such as a law degree, or even go out and get a job as something like a school bus driver. The state’s Democratic Attorney General Jim Hood has had Circuit Judge Tomie Green issue an injunction blocking the release of 21 inmates. They want to make sure the proper procedures were followed. An inmate seeking a pardon is supposed to place an ad in a newspaper in or near the county they were convicted in 30 days prior to the Governor even being able to consider the pardon request. they suspect at least some of them didn’t meet that requirement.

Green also set a hearing date for five former inmates who were released over the weekend due to Barbour’s pardons. They must show proof that they too had placed the ads as required by the state’s Constitution. Those five that were already released worked as trustees at the Governor’s Mansion. It is surprising to see what these five were convicted of and yet were still released. First there is David Gatlin who was convicted of killing his estranged wife in 1993. He also shot her friend who survived the attack.Next up, Joseph Ozment who killed a man during a robbery in 1994, Anthony McCray, convicted of killing his wife in 2001. Then there are two that were sentenced to life in prison. Charles Hooker convicted of murder in 1992, and Nathan Kern who was sentenced to life in 1982 for a burglary after two prior convictions.

It is also being pointed out that among those pardoned were Brett Favre’s brother Scott who was pleaded guilty in 1997 to driving in front of a train while drunk. An incident which killed his friend and passenger in the process.

So, who’s glad Mr. Barbour decided to NOT make a run for the White House? :::raises hand:::

Elsewhere in the trends:

Women’s X-Game Skiing pioneer Sarah Burke is in critical condition in an induced coma after a serious accident during a training run on Tuesday. The four-time X-Games winner was preparing to compete in a sponsor’s event in Park City, Utah when the accident occurred. She was airlifted to a Salt Lake City hospital.

It is such a shame. Hopefully she will make a full recovery and be able to compete at the 2014 Olympic Games in Socchi that she was instrumental in getting her event, the Superpipe, included in.

A group of Marine snipers from Camp Lejune recorded themselves urinating on the corpses of members of the Taliban in Afghanistan. Unbelievable that these idiots didn’t realize beforehand that they would not only be pissing on the corpses but also pissing on the entire tradition and history of the U.S. Marines. Apparently they are investigating and trying to identify the men in the video so they can be punished. The Today Show had said they were from Camp Lejune which is why I stated that earlier.

Yes, Hostess has declared bankruptcy, but it is the reorganization type of bankruptcy. So, America you can calm down! Your Twinkies, Cupcakes, and Ho-Hos aren’t going anywhere. Mainly it will be the employees that are going away. Wait, does this make you happier? Their plan is to eliminate/restructure costs associated with ingredients and their workforce. They said all those favorites as well as Wonder Bread will remain stocked on store shelves during the reorganization.

Apparently, the final season of the show, “One Tree Hill” premiered last night. All I have to say about this is…Umm this show is REALLY still on TV? Sheesh, it survives and so many other actually GOOD shows fade away way too earlier.

Also trending overnight and today are things related to snow moving across parts of the country. Out weather man here in Tulsa said there was a chance for flurries. Apparently flurries is now defined as about 3 hours of heavy flurries. Granted in the end it probably didn’t accumulate to much, but with the snow on the ground out overnight low was 23 with a wind chill of 5! Today’s high is set at just 39 degrees, and tonight’s low is 18 with the still sustained wins near 10MPH overnight pushing the wind chill rather close to or below 0.

The final trending topic I will mention is the People’s Choice Awards. I didn’t watch, but I can tell you that Katy Perry was the big winner of the night. She won five awards in all. She won for; favorite female artist, tour headliner, song of the year (ET), music video (Last Friday Night), and even for TV guest star for her appearance on How I Met Your Mother. Even though she won big she was nowhere to be seen. She canceled her scheduled appearance and wasn’t there to accept the awards. The final Harry Potter movie won four awards for; favorite movie, action movie, book adaptation, and ensemble movie cast.

Well as can be expected, today’s trends are led by football related topics. You see not only is it the first day of the NFL Playoffs, but the U.S. Army All-American Bowl is currently on NBC (as I write this).

The US Army All-American Bowl is a High School Football game where the best in the country get to showcase their skills before they head off to college. The majority of them are already committed to their chosen college. This year’s game includes at least one HUGE name that, while he has already made the decision won’t be announcing where he will be headed off to college until sometime during or after this game. That player is Barry Sanders, Jr. . Yes, THAT Barry Sanders! Junior has previously said his decision has come down to Stanford, or his dad’s alma mater, Oklahoma State University.

Personally, I hope he comes to OSU. I am not a college football fan in the sense that I root for one specific team. Instead I just like seeing GOOD football and good players. Living in Oklahoma I get to see A LOT of news on OSU and OU and yes generally they have a lot of good players through the years. It is fun to watch. I think being able to watch Barry Sanders grow as a player and into an NFL would be amazing. The one college football game I have ever attended was an OSU game. I got to see Dez Bryant play before he went onto the NFL and became a Cowboy…well he was a Cowboy in college too, but I mean a Dallas Cowboy. If Sanders goes to OSU, I think we might be attending another OSU game within the next 3 years.

Of course he isn’t the only star in the game. I think they said there are 8 kids playing who have former NFL fathers. It is currently halftime in the game with the West winning 24-6. The West is the team Sanders is on, and he already rushed for a touchdown.

Now onto the NFL. Today is Wild Card Weekend. Many of my friends think I am crazy, but I think the team that will come out of the AFC and play in this year’s Super Bowl is playing today. The AFC teams playing one another today are the Cincinnati Bengals and Houston Texans. I believe whoever wins that game will wind up in the Super Bowl. Granted the Bengals are young and the Texans are banged up but I think one of them will make it. In the NFC Wild Card game I also think the winner could be playing in the Super Bowl next month. In this game though I can confidently say the winner will be the New Orleans Saints. I joked earlier in the week that the final score will be Saints 63 – Lions 46. I do feel that might not be too far off really. It will be high scoring and the Saints will keep trying to put it away. In the end though the Lions won’t be able to keep pace. Drew Brees will probably break 500 yards while Stafford tops 400. That might be the first time it has ever happened in the playoffs, too.

Elsewhere in the trends:

There will be a Republican Debate in New Hampshire tonight. ABC will actually be televising this one. The problem is over on NBC the Saints will be playing the Lions so ratings should be even lower than normal for a debate. Especially a debate that means very very little. New Hampshire is a state that Mitt Romney is fully expected to run away with. If ABC wants to boost ratings tonight they should do a crossover event. Scheduled right before the debate tonight on ABC is an episode of Wipeout. Let’s see if Romney, Gingrich or Paul can handle the Big Balls! Of course it would be an unfair competition because Rick Santorum wouldn’t go ANYWHERE near the Big Balls.

Portlandia is still in the trending list. I watched the season two premiere last night. It was the first time I had ever seen the show. While it was funny at times I think it is a bit of an acquired taste. I think I can best describe it as… Think of SNL if SNL were set in Portland, had only 2 real cast members, and less skits that don’t make the cut. Of course, this doesn’t mean I won’t be seeking out season one to give the show a real chance. Just be prepared for a different kind of humor if you tune in.

Let’s talk about some movies for a moment. There are a few of them in the trending list. The one I am most interested in seeing doesn’t even hit theaters until January 20th and it has been trending for a while now. It is a George Lucas film about the Tuskegee Airmen which stars Terrence Howard. It is based on the true story of the black fighter pilots in World War II that fought and fought just to get a chance to actually fight. I saw Howard on Live with Kelly! the other day and he gave some insight into why the Tuskegee Airmen were so good when they got their chance to be in the actual fight. He pointed out that when the white pilots we put into battle thay had about 3 months of training. By the time the Tuskegee Airmen were given their chance they had been training for about 2 years. Oh, by the way, the name of the film is Red Tails. The title refers to the fact that the planes they were given were marked with red tails to signify it was a black fighter pilot. Look for it in theaters on the 20th.

The next movie I want to talk about is, “The Devil Inside”. This one just goes to show that an independent film can make it even in this day of major blockbuster movies with huge budgets. It opened in theaters yesterday and pulled in $16.5 million its first day! In comparison, #2 yesterday was Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol which pulled in just $6.2 million. Not bad for a movie that many have never heard of before. Sounds like an interesting film in the horror – exorcism genres. The IMDB.com description, “In Italy, a woman becomes involved in a series of unauthorized exorcisms during her mission to discover what happened to her mother, who allegedly murdered three people during her own exorcism.” I am adding it to my long list of many horror movies I need to get caught up on and actually watch.

The third film on the trending list is espionage thriller, “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy”. I have been seeing commercials for this one all over the place. (Never heard of The Devil Inside until yesterday.) It has been in limited release for four weeks now and was just expanded into more theaters. It came in a disappointing ninth place yesterday with just $1.72 million. Those commercials I saw, didn’t make me want to see it. Apparently many others feel the same way. Of course this will probably be the one to get nominated for a bunch of Oscars.

Finally, Charles Addams is on the trending list today. This is because today would have been his 100th birthday. To celebrate this Google’s image today is a drawing created by the Tee & Charles Addams Foundation for them. Addams of course created The Addams Family <snap><snap>. It began as a cartoon drawing in 1938 for The New Yorker magazine and was later adapted into the popular 1960s television show and a series of 1990s movies. A creation that will assuredly be remembered for even more generations to come.

This just in: Barry Sanders, Jr. has decided to go to Stanford. Oh well, so much for seeing him play in college.

Every day on the Today Show Natalie Morales or whoever is at the news desk for the day goes of the news that is trending for the day. They usually cover some interesting, and as expected with online trends some annoying stories. This gave me the idea to do a similar thing here on BloggingInAmerica. So, even though I may not do it everyday I will be doing a post that goes over some of the trending items from the day that interest me.

As the title of the post says, for now I am tentatively calling it Blogging The Trends. We will see if the name sticks or not.

The trending topic I am most interested in today is definitely Van Halen! The band (with original frontman David Lee Roth in place) played their first concert since 2008 at a small club, “Cafe Wha?” in Greenwich Village, New York last night. It was the beginning of their promotional tour for their new album, “A Different Kind of Truth” which is set to be released on February 7th. Fans won’t have to wait till then to hear some of their new material as the first single and video for the song, “Tattoo”, will be released this coming Tuesday, January 10th.

The setlist that the small crowd of about 250 got to hear at Cafe Wha? reads a lot like a greatest hits CD with some lesser hits that in my opinion is just as good if not better than the ones considered to be the biggest hits. They also included one song off the new album, “She’s The Woman”.

Here’s the full setlist:
You Really Got Me
Runnin’ With The Devil
Somebody Get Me A Doctor
Everybody Wants Some
She’s The Woman
Dance The Night Away
Panama
Hot For Teacher
Ice Cream Man
Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love
Jump
Beautiful Girls
Unchained

The tour kicks off on February 18th in Louisville, Kentucky at the KFC Yum! Center. I will be looking forward to May 1st when they roll into Tulsa, OK at the BOK Center! For a full list of tour dates click here. I am also looking forward to hearing the new album since it is the first studio release with DLR on vocals since the huge hit, “1984″.

Elsewhere on the trending list:

Jersey Shore Season 5 kicked off last night. While I am sure millions tuned in, I was not among them. I did however catch Snooki recently on Leno and Live with Kelly. There was talk about The Situation’s friend “The Unit” appearing on the show this season. From what I have heard, and just from looking at pictures of him I have a feeling it might be more appropriate for him to have “The Tool” tattooed on his bicep than “Unit”.

One other note, I grew up in Jersey, in a Shore town with its own Amusement Park and Beach. I also spent A LOT of time in Seaside and Point Pleasant. While there are quite a few like those seen on Jersey Shore, let me assure you that MOST are nothing like them.

Apparently the video diary of Casey Anthony that was released on YouTube yesterday WAS indeed her, BUT her lawyers are claiming she did NOT post it, nor did she give anyone permission to post it online. Jon Briley, an Ohio man, appeared on Nancy Grace last night and claims he found the video on a pay web site that was charging $3-5 to show the video. He says he then found it for free , downloaded it and then put it on YouTube so it would be free for everyone to view so Anthony would not be profiting from the video.

Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel are now engaged. Happy to see that, they seem to make a great couple, and it should be different than the normal high profile marriage and last. I must say those are going to be some REALLY pretty and talented babies!

<img class="size-medium wp-image-1267" title="aaptopix-japan-pricey-tuna Shizuo Kambayashi / AP" src="http://blogginginamerica.net/files/2012/01/aaptopix-japan-pricey-tuna-300x200.jpg" alt="Kiyoshi Kimura, left, cuts a bluefin tuna in front of his restaurant near Tokyo's Tsukiji fish market on Jan. 5, 2012.
A Bluefin Tuna sold for a whale of a price in Japan! The owner of the Tokyo based Kiyomura Co., Kiyoshi Kimura purchased a 593 lb. Bluefin Tuna for a whopping $735,000. It is a bit of tradition that the Tsukiji market auction rings in a new record price in its first auction of the new year. This year’s price indeed broke last year’s record of about $260,000. Last year, and a lot of the time the record tunas head to somewhere overseas. This year however Kimura said he wanted to make sure it stayed in Japan saying, “Rather than having it taken away overseas, I wish for Japanese people to eat good tuna together. Despite the March 11 earthquake and the sluggish economy, I want to lift up Japan’s spirits urging people to work hard together.” By the way, that is $1,247 a pound!

Keri Russell and husband Shane Dreary had their second child on Thursday, a girl. They have named her Willa Lou. She joins her four year old brother River as the couple’s two children. Congratulations to the happy couple!

Long-time Saturday Night Live cast member Fred Armisen’s IFC series Portlandia has its second season premiere tonight at 9PM ET. I didn’t hear about this show until a few days ago. I have to say I will be DVRing it tonight and if it is any good I will get caught up on season one.

Former Mrs. Tiger Woods, Elin Nordegren has had a $12.3 Million 1932 estate she purchased demolished, and plans to build her own dream home on the North Palm Beach, Florida locale.

The Cubs have traded Carlos Zambrano to the Florida Marlins. I am thinking it still won’t be enough to put the Marlins atop the N.L. East.

Finally, The Girl Scouts are celebrating their historic 100th anniversary this year. To celebrate they are introducing a brand new Girl Scout Cookie that will be sold alongside long-time favorites like Samoas, Tagalongs, Trefoils, and of course the Thin Mints. the new cookie are named “Savanna Smiles”. It is a “bite-sized, lemon-wedge cookie dusted with powdered sugar and bursting with zesty lemon flavor”. They are named in honor of Girl Scouts founder Juliette Gordon Low’s hometown of Savannah, Georgia.
Today is a sad day. Long-time iconic actor Harry Morgan has passed away at the age of 96. He had been acting since way back in the 1940s and has play quite a few unforgettable characters through the years.

My favorite, as many people will agree, was as Colonel Sherman T. Potter on the show M*A*S*H. It is definitely one of the best TV characters of all-time on one of the best shows of all-time. Before he took over at the 4077th though he was the long-time partner of Joe Friday, Bill Gannon, on the show Dragnet. But even before that he was Pete Porter, first on December Bride and then in his own spin-off, Pete and Gladys.

Here is a clip from the Jack Benny show with Webb and Morgan in character.

He actually appeared as Pete Porter in more TV episodes than he did in any other role. (227 as Porter, 179 as Potter, and 98 as Gannon). Regardless of which role you will remember him most for, the point is he will be fondly remembered by millions and millions of TV fans.

One of my favorite M*A*S*H memories is one that most don’t even remember or realize. Before he was cast as Lt. Colonel Henry Braymore Blake’s replacement as the leader of the 4077th, Morgan appeared on the show as a General, well a Major General. The character was Major Bradford Hamilton Steele in the episode The General Flipped At Dawn. It was an amazing character that couldn’t gave been brought to life better by any actor other than Morgan. It is this role that led producers to later choose him as his better known character of Colonel Potter.

Morgan also appeared in over 100 films. (When you count made for TV movies.) Many memorable movies like Inherit The Wind, High Noon, Support Your Local Sheriff!, and so many more. He even reprised his role as Bill Gannon, now a Captain in the 1987 film version of Dragnet starring Tom Hanks and Dan Aykroyd.

Over the next couple days I will be trying to compile my Top 11 List of my favorite Harry Morgan M*A*S*H moments. Although I don’t know that I will be able to include many clips of the scenes I choose because it seems there is a lack of M*A*S*H clips readily available online.

Goodbye, Farewell & Amen Harry Morgan, you will be missed, but always remembered.

This clips is definitely the best way to end this post. Thank you to whoever posted it on YouTube.
